As a small child trips to the cemetery where a frequent event. We lived less than a half a mile as the crow flies and family members as far back as my paternal Great-Great Grandfather was buried there in 1881.
I went most often with my Grandmother (my father's mother). Looking back I realized that when I was small her grief at the lost of my Grandfather was still fresh. She was only 53 years old when he passed. We would dig up the ground around his grave and plant Marigolds as they can serve the heat and sunshine. Then we would make the trek across the meadow and water them a couple times a week.
Last night I took our too oldest granddaughters to the Cemetery to deliver the final pot of flowers. I still live just across the way from the cemetery., however the meadow is now filled with homes and so the road to the Cemetery is a bit longer.
I often tease I haven't gotten far from home, we built a home next to were I grew up about 15 years ago. Our Son and his family, live just next door in the house I grew up in. It is also the house my father was born and raised in. Five generations have lived in this house.
I was fortunate to have two amazing parents, there were partners in life and were great examples of how to live and give back. My father has been gone 10 1/2 years now and my Mom 5 1/2.
My father served in the Korean War leaving just shortly after my mom and him were married. I often thought when I was first married how it would have been to have Tom gone for over a year, not knowing if he would return alive.
I not only honor the men who served and those serving today but their wives and family the sacrifice is great.
